What should I major in?
Making decision is always headachy and
nerve-racking problem for me, even for choosing between lunch set A or B, not
to say choosing major. Declaring a right major is as important as marrying with
a right partner as both issue somewhat determine how the rest of life goes. What
bachelor degree I hold normally means which sector I will enter in the future.
Thus, the major I am going to study next year is crucial and planning is needed
from now on.
I am now at the crossroad of my life –
declaring Media and Communication or Culture and
Heritage Management as my major?
Being a prolific, independent backstage
producer in media industry is my will. Without belonging to a single
company, but doing media-related projects on my own, with my own belief. It
sounds a bit vague, but I think a producer should not be bounded to a certain
career. For example, being a writer is not enough, he should take up the role
of screenwriter too. To trace back the origin of my aspiration in media
industry, it must be linked with my childhood. I always wonder why the anchor
in the TV box can report lots of news to me but I cannot talk to her.
Gradually, I realize that is the magnificent
penetrating power of media, widespread and influential, and I strive for
entering the media sector.
Correlating with the Media and
Communication programme, I think the course is interdisciplinary
which provides multiple aspects of fields in media and communication including
advertising, public relation and journalism. I expect to learn fundamental
knowledge and professional practical skill which equip me to be well-prepared and
be qualified in the workplace later. Specifically, the stream of multimedia
journalism is the aspect what I want to drill and further my study.
To me, multimedia journalism is an exciting career as the industry is highly
competitive. Yet, possession of a journalism degree does not guarantee success,
only the fittest survive, as fierce as the rule in the ecosystem. Working in media profession highly depends on
one’s creativity and multi-tasking capability. As the media industry is so
ever-changing, I doubt my ability is not superb and brilliant that can handle
these kind of creative jobs, not to say becoming a pioneer.
On the contrary, for the
major cultural and heritage management, it is a programme that is rather
balanced between a promising and interesting career. In particular, the future
career can be glamorous, working in museum, galleries, libraries... Professionals
working in the cultural management industry should give consideration on both
the past and future and have a proactive mind in order to create a sustainable
environment for the sake of the next generation. Cultural management is an
important concept and the industry urge energetic new blood to enter. Indeed,
Hong Kong is a unique place where East meets West. The British-style
architecture, the collective memory, the characterized food are elements that
build the image of Hong Kong. However, when we flip the newspaper every day, it
is not difficult to find issues about the tear down of old public estate or
monuments and the closure of historic small stores. It seems that there is no
way to stop but to accept the cruel fact in this money-minded society.
Through the programme, I
expect to learn to appreciate the culture and history from different parts of
the world. The main focus is to acquire solution that can remedy the situation
of balancing the interests between various stakeholders. Borrowing the
experience from other countries which have similar cases before can help to
develop a better plan in urban construction.
Every choice has its
puddle and no one knows the ending of a film is happy or sad until they watch
it. No matter which major I am going to choose, every goal without proper and
immediate action is just an airy notion. Thus, what I need to strive for good
grades in every courses. With I high GPA, I can have more choices.

An essay describing a place I have been to
Entering the university is about starting an entirely different life and stepping into another world. Everything has changed, including your body clock, ways of learning, social circle. The most drastic change about my university life is living in the student residence. If you ask me to count the days that I did not go back home, I would say it is about 2 weeks. Since the start of those successive orientation camps, my life is packed with reunions with my new friends. While we get only 24 hours a day, it is a must that something is left behind. And the easiest thing to be left out is – HOME and the neighborhood.
Yes, I miss home a lot. It is said that we do not simply love a place, instead, we love what happened and people in that place. To me, Sai Ying Pun is where is belong. It is my root. All my memorable moments happened in here. I was born in a hospital here. I finished my primary and secondary education here. I spent my leisure time hanging around, having tea time with my classmates who marks significance in my life. Every time I close my eyes, the daily routine, walking down the steep road, popped out in my mind.
My secondary school, Ying Wa Girls’ School is built up on the hill in central district and surrounded by grand residence. It is a tranquil and peaceful place. As our schoolmates are rather active, the school often receive complaints from the residents living nearby. However, I believe that it add amusement to the neighborhood there. Afterschool, in order to save money, most of the schoolmates living in Western district tend to walk back home. Thus, it creates a ‘’blue sea’’ along the road downhill because of the blue school uniform.
In hillside, it is a place full of friendliness, warmth and love. I was grown up in this small community. Unlike the grand residence up on the hill where the neighbor do not know one another well, the bonding between the neighbors in my estate are very close. When we come across one another, we ask what are we doing lately like how is my academic study or what we do in this hot summer. Even though everything are changing day by day like old shops are crammed down and new shops are built in a faster and faster pace, there is still one shop which stops the time. It is a grocery store selling fresh pork, fish and cured food. When I was small, my mother treated the store as a day-care center and put me there. Then I sit on a folded chair and watch the pedestrian outside the shop. When the butcher are free, they would play with me. Though I am a grown-up now, they still always chat with me.
People cannot see things they owned in hands. But they will realize when they lost it. At this moment, I miss home and my neighborhood.
